Abstract:
While many attribute the rising incidences of violence and child abuse to the dangerous content freely available on the Net, censorship is also seen by many as a contravention of their fundamental right to free speech and a violation of democratic principles. Over the years, with the web progressively becoming a more commercialized, controlled and a more corporate medium, there is increased political and corporate pressure to restrict access to 'controversial' material. Despite the Internet’s decentralized architecture, many countries implement both legal and technical mechanisms to control the content of the published information on the Internet and their citizens’ access to it. Being a topic of social as well as political importance, the issue of Internet censorship is fiercely debated in political and social forums around the world.
Pedagogical Objectives:
- To discuss the pros and cons of internet
- To understand the issue of internet censorship
- To discuss the various legislations carried out to enforce censorship
- To analyse the various methods used for censorship
- To debate on the problems that arise due to censorship.
